USS HARRY S. TRUMAN, At sea (NNS) -- USS Harry S. Truman's (CVN 75) Family Readiness Group (FRG) recently sponsored a gift box auction in which 49 boxes were auctioned to support homecoming activities.
"Do I hear three-hundred and seventy-five dollars? Going once, going twice, SOLD!" Chief Aviation Electrician's Mate (AW/SW) Shannon Thoftne bellowed as Master-At-Arms 2nd Class (SW) Michael Lynch won with the highest bid on the colorfully wrapped box.
"I was really happy with everything I got," said Lynch. "I got Madden 2011, the newest Call of Duty game, Wii Resort and Wii Fit. I'll test it out first and then give it to my son for Christmas. Dad's got to try it out to make sure it works."
Thoftne, along with Senior Chief Aviation Support Equipment Technician James Elswick, a duo known-as "Shake-N-Bake", acted as the auctioneers of the FRG-donated themed packages during the fund-raising event.
"The auction raised $4,177," said Chief Electronics Technician (SW) Elizabeth Barnes, Truman's FRG liaison. "All of which is going to support Truman's homecoming events for family members."
The themes for the gift-wrapped items included titles such as "Hair Affair", a collection of female hair products, and "Brain Busters", an assortment of puzzles and brain-teasers.
"There were a variety of items at the auction," said Yeoman Seaman Marquis Dewitt, who purchased a puzzle box. "They had something for everybody, male and female. There was even an all-Spiderman theme. I will definitely show up if there is another auction."
The FRG auction accomplished two important aspects: raising funds for Truman's homecoming and boosting crew members' morale.
