WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy Office of Information debuted the "Navy Veteran" logo Nov. 1 on the U.S. Navy Facebook page.

The logo, a product of a competition among Navy Mass Communication Specialists, was created to be used by Navy veterans throughout November as a means of showing their service.

The U.S. Navy Facebook page posted the logo and the following text to the over 220,000 fans that "like" the page online.

"As we approach Veteran's Day on November 11 we want to spend this time recognizing the contribution of our Navy Veterans. From next door neighbors, to relatives, colleagues and friends - it is very likely that you know someone who served in the Navy and may not even realize it."

Specifically designed to be used as a profile photo on a Facebook page, the fans on the U.S. Navy Facebook page were asked to share the logo among friends and family in their online network. Navy veterans were asked to use the logo as their profile picture on Facebook on Veterans' Day, Nov. 11.

The winning design was created by Mass Communication Specialist (SW) Michael Cortez, assigned to the Navy Public Affairs Support Element (NPASE), Norfolk, Va.

"I am always honored to show my appreciation for our Veterans. So I was overwhelmed to hear my logo design was chosen to represent this important day," said Cortez. "Being active duty during a time when people will go out of there way to thank us for our service, it is another honor to be able to give this back as my appreciation to those who served before me."

There are variations of the logo that can be used by sons, daughters, spouses, grandchildren, parents and friends of veterans as well. The logo is easily printable and can be posted and used at home, at work, on Facebook and other social profiles to create awareness of Navy veterans in communities and online networks.

The logo is available on the U.S. Navy Facebook page at www.facebook.com/USNavy and on the Navy Visual News Service Flickr account at www.flickr.com/user/USNavyNVNS/.>

Are you kidding me? Where is the anchor? There is nothing about it that is Navy.

First, what kind of an idiot doesn't know whether or not he was in the Navy? As to the logo, looks like it was made by a third grader. The proposed new uniform should be suitable for wearing to dog or cat fights. What happened to the old khakis? Back to the drawing board!

Absolutely ghastly! I proudly served for 23 years, and I would put this thing on absolutely nothing... No tradition whatsoever! Who is running the Navy these days that would let something like this happen! Seems our admiralty has lost the helm to politicians (more like they have become politicians)!

To begin with, why is anyone spending time or money on a Navy veterans logo? We identify with our branch of service and unit(s) already. Why attempt to legislate change to tradition? Take the person who spent all the time and money on this project, and put them to work doing mission related tasks for those in service now. Don't even get me started on what I think of a logo that includes the shape of a dog tag. Study history and then create, but not on the back of a napkin!

I certainly hope this isn't the final version. Maybe those in charge will solicit Navy veterans' ideas and develop a recognition logo Navy veterans would be proud to own and wear. What happened to tradition? Has this "new" Navy forgotten? Maybe some of us "Old Salt" should come back and have a "discussion" with this new Navy.

Stinks! Looks like something off a candy wrapper. Vets don't need or want anything except the service logos we have - patches, unit insignias, etc. - nothing meaningless and made-up.

Could it be better? Sure, but you know he only did it to get out of watch or sweepers, and then spent half of that time at the smoke pit. I love all you old grumpy seaman, happy Veterans Day, shipmates.

We don't need no stinkin logo....we KNOW who we are and are proud of it. The thought is noble but the execution is amateur. It's just a tactic to sell product where I'd rather wear my ship's logo and squadron insignia, which I do. I carry a U.S. Veteran card in my wallet which opens doors to discounts.

Cleaned up and made more metalized/3D looking, might be okay. As is, not so much. Looks entirely like something out the Franklin Roosevelt era and printed via 1980's dot matrix printers. And what are those blobs above the eagle's head?

11/5/2010 4:02:00 PM
Not all change is good - blue and gold should be more prominently featured. And do we really NEED a logo?

11/4/2010 8:34:00 PM
Looks more Air Force than Navy to this ole Sailor.

Good grief, you whiners. In this day and age with budget cuts, do you really expect the money to be sitting around to do the RFP for a graphic which doesn't affect current operations? If you think you can do better, then I encourage you to submit your own designs for next year. If not, as I expect, then do us all the favor of keeping your whining to yourself, shipmate.

This logo reflects the current mindset of the Navy - the digital dungarees and combat boots. Sorry, I don't care for either. Go back to cotton for work uniforms and "Navy blue" and "gold" for our logos. What is that above the crow's head? Next year, have the veterans themslves design their own logo!

11/4/2010 4:03:00 AM
Since you asked. I think it ranks right up there with the pullover "dungarees", suitcoat blues for all hands and the great idea to use 100% polyester double knit and CNT fabrics for shipboard uniforms. Please don't ask what I think about the recent "new" uniforms. Bringing back Service Dress Khaki was a great idea though.

The eagle looks good, the rest is awful.

11/3/2010 2:50:00 PM
That is a sorry looking logo!

11/2/2010 9:37:00 PM
That's the best we've got? That appears to be a graphic created in 1992 on a Mac II? This appears to be a .gif style image with little forethought. I expect and demand better.
