NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- The USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) Family Readiness Group (TRFRG) announced April 26, that it is accepting scholarship applications for the 2011-2012 academic year.
The scholarship will allow children and spouses of TR crew members the opportunity to start or continue undergraduate and graduate degree programs in any discipline.
"One of the best benefits the Navy offers is access to higher education for Sailors and their families," said Amanda Verissimo, TRFRG president. "Applying for this scholarship gives family members another avenue to help finance the expense of college."
Requirements for the scholarship and application forms are posted on the ship's website and Facebook pages, and have been put out to the crew in the ship's plan of the day.
TRFRG members are excited to be able to offer this to the families of TR Sailors, who are highly engaged in the local communities.
"TR Sailors are giving their time and resources to many projects in the community, particularly in schools" said Capt. William Hart, USS Theodore Roosevelt commanding officer. "So this scholarship is a great way to help give back to TR families while meeting their educational needs."
Theodore Roosevelt committed his life to building America through leadership, citizenship, and education. This scholarship fund continues that legacy by giving children getting ready to leave for school or spouses busy supporting a military family, another method to get vital funding for their higher education.
