NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Members of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 22's First Class Petty Officers Association volunteered to serve meals at Norfolk's Central Baptist Church, March 12.

Every Monday morning, with the support of community volunteers, the church provides a free hot meal to anyone in need.

Culinary Specialist 1st Class Adrianna Andrade, Logistics Specialist 1st Class Oscar Davila and Information Systems Technician 1st Class Tony Nelson greeted guests as they arrived, served meals and conversed with the guests while providing a warm, friendly and comfortable atmosphere in which to eat.

"It was a great opportunity to provide service those who need a little help," Andrade said. "We hope to make this community relations event a regular occurrence supported by the staff and our ships."

Sailors spent nearly four hours at the church setting up tables and chairs, serving hot meals to more than 50 guests and cleaning up the social hall after the meal.

"It was a pleasure to have you visit and help with the chores," said Dewey Rogerson, program director for the ministry. "Again, thank you for your service."

DESRON 22 is based at Naval Station Norfolk and currently has cognizance over 12 destroyers and frigates.
