SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Sailors and Military Sealift Command (MSC) personnel on board the USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) received 10,548 boxes of Girl Scout cookies and notes of support as part of the Girl Scouts San Diego program, Operation Thin Mint, April 6.
The cookies are scheduled to be distributed on board Mercy during Pacific Partnership 2012.
"I think it is very appropriate that the cookies are going to the Mercy," said Mary Doyle, director of Communications Girl Scouts San Diego. "The Girl Scouts are known for making the world a better place, and of course that's Pacific Partnership's mission as well."
Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Jo Dee C. Jacob and Communications Director Deborah Baker founded Operation Thin Mint in 2002, as a way for the Girl Scouts to show support to the troops after 9/11.
According to Doyle, the Girl Scouts of San Diego plan to distribute their 2-millionth box of cookies for the program this year.
"The girls are thrilled to send the men and women serving our country 'a taste of home,'" said Doyle.
This year the Girl Scouts are also providing hand-written letters and pictures along with the cookies. The letters have messages written by Girl Scouts to show their appreciation for the men and women of the armed forces.
Many of the Girl Scouts in the area are related to, or know someone in the military, said Adrienne Wong, a Girl Scout Troop 4081 mother.
"Many of the children in our troop have parents in the Navy," Wong said. "So knowing that the cookies may be going to their parents on deployment gives them a strong sense of pride."
"The troops do so much for us," said 10 year old Hailee Wong of Troop 4081. "They are putting their lives on the line for us, so I want to thank them by giving them cookies. I hope that makes them feel happy."
USNS Mercy is currently deployed on Pacific Partnership 2012, a humanitarian mission in the Pacific to strengthen relationships with Pacific nations to better respond to natural disasters.
