SILVERDALE, Wash. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Northwest learned May 16 that they were the recipient of both the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) and Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Safety awards for safety achievements in 2011.
NAVFAC Northwest is the first Naval Facilities Engineering Command to implement the Occupational Safety & Health Administrations' (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program, and in May 2011 was designated "STAR SITE" ® status by OSHA's Region X Administrator Dean Ikeda.
"I am very proud of the folks at NAVFAC Northwest for changing the culture of safety whether at work or at home", said Capt. Pat Rios, commanding officer of NAVFAC Northwest. "Without hesitation they embrace the motto, Mission First, Safety Always."
Both awards recognize the outstanding performance and culture in safety and occupational health. As a result, NAVFAC Northwest directly contributed to the Secretary of Defense's goal of reducing mishaps by 75 percent and demonstrating strong safety leadership.
Along with receiving recognition for excellence, NAVFAC Northwest has earned the right to fly the SECNAV Safety Flag for a year.
