GROTON, Conn. (NNS) -- Vice Adm. Michael S. Rogers, commander, U.S. Fleet Cyber Command (USFCC), U.S. 10th Fleet, visited Navy Information Operation Detachment (NIOD) Groton and Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE), July 26, 2012.
Holding an all-hands call with NIOD Sailors, Rogers highlighted that their efforts go beyond cryptology and intelligence support to the submarine community.
"Fleet Cyber Command and U.S. 10th Fleet work hard to ensure our Navy's ability to deliver the right information, at the right time, in the right format, to the right joint or fleet ccmmander and the forces they direct," said Rogers. "We are only successful because of your hard work and time here at NIOD."
Fleet Cyber Command and U.S. 10th Fleet serve as the Navy's central operational authority for cyberspace operations supporting forces afloat and ashore. The commands operate a secure, interoperable naval network and coordinate the Navy's operational requirements for cyberspace, cryptology and signal intelligence, information operations, and space capabilities.
"We serve at the convergence of sea power and cyber power and must continue to advance the Navy's capability and capacity," said Rogers.
NIOD Sailors were inspired by the Commander's insight.
"It was very interesting to talk to Vice Admiral Rogers and listen to what he had to say," said Information Systems Technician Seaman Felix Carlos. "To learn the about the direction that cyber warfare and the U.S. 10th Fleet is heading was an eye opening experience."
Rogers not only had the chance to speak of the future for Fleet Cyber Command and U.S. 10th Fleet, but he also had the chance to recognize NIOD Sailors who were making a difference today.
He presented awards to the detachment's Junior Sailor and Sailor of the Quarter among others.
Before departing SUBASE, Rogers inspected "the convergence of sea power and cyber power" first hand as he toured the new Virginia-class fast attack submarine USS New Mexico (SSN 779) and met members of the crew.
U.S. Fleet Cyber Command is an echelon 2 command that serves as the Navy Component Command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, providing operational employment of the Navy's cyber and network operations, information operations, and cryptologic and space forces. It also is the Navy Service Cryptologic Component to the National Security Agency and Central Security Service. U.S. 10th Fleet was re-commissioned to control operations supporting Fleet Cyber Command.
