NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Navy Warfare Development Command (NWDC) announced that the senior vice president of Maritime Services for Maersk Line Limited (MLL), will present at its Speaker Series Sept. 20, from 10:00 to 11:00 EDT.

Stephen M. Carmel will talk about "Maritime Security, Globalization, and Navy Strategy," at NWDC's headquarters on Naval Station Norfolk and over Defense Connect Online.

At MLL, Carmel is responsible for all technical and operating activities. He is a member of the Chief of Naval Operations Executive Panel (N00K), a 2009 senior fellow at the Homeland Security Policy Institute at The George Washington University, on the Board of Trustees of the Old Dominion University Research Foundation, a member of the Marine Board of the National Research Council and a member of the Hydrographic Services Review Panel for NOAA.

An experienced merchant mariner, Carmel graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1979. He holds a Master of Arts in Economics and a Master of Business Administration from Old Dominion University. He is currently a Ph.D candidate in International Studies with an emphasis in international political economy and second emphasis in conflict. His research and publishing interests are in maritime security, trade and conflict, and arctic regional issues.

"Steve is a thought-provoking speaker with expansive knowledge of the global, economic and political issues facing the industry," said Rear Adm. Terry B. Kraft, commander, NWDC. "Given the increasing interactions between commercial shipping and the Navy in places like the Gulf of Aden and Strait of Hormuz, his talk should be timely and stimulating."

Participants in the Hampton Roads area are invited to view the presentation in-person at NWDC's headquarters at 1528 Piersey Street, Building O-27, on Naval Station Norfolk.

Registration, DCO and other information can be found on NWDC's website at https://www.nwdc.navy.mil/ncoi/speaker/default.aspx. A video of the presentation will be posted on NWDC's YouTube channel following the event.

The NWDC Speaker Series is designed to stimulate provocative discussion and action to drive a culture of innovation in the Navy.
