GALVESTON, Texas (NNS) -- The littoral combat ship Fort Worth (LCS 3) arrived at the Port of Galveston, Monday, Sept. 17 in preparation for her commissioning ceremony, Sept. 22.

The ship is named for Fort Worth, Texas, the 17th largest city in the United States and the 5th largest city in Texas. The first Navy ship to bear the name and the second in the Freedom variant of the littoral combat ship, Fort Worth, is outfitted with reconfigurable mission packages, which can be changed out quickly, and focus on three mission areas: mine countermeasures, surface warfare and anti-submarine warfare.

In addition to her three primary warfare missions, the ship's inherent capabilities and suitability to conduct lower-end missions will free up more expensive, multi-mission cruisers and destroyers to conduct higher-end missions.

"It is great to finally be in Galveston. The Navy could not have chosen a better place to host the commissioning of its newest warship," said Fort Worth blue crew Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Randy Blankenship. "The crew is looking forward to getting some rest and relaxation prior to bringing the ship to life Saturday. I am certain we will enjoy the great southern hospitality of the citizens of Galveston and Fort Worth, and we are looking forward to building a strong, lasting relationship with two of Texas' finest cities."

Fort Worth will be open for general public tours on a limited basis, Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 18-20, from 1-4 p.m., with the last tour starting at 3:30 p.m.

Following commissioning, Fort Worth will sail to its homeport of San Diego, Calif.
