WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy has directed the temporary return of the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower(CVN 69) from her current overseas deployment, allowing the ship to return home for two months before sending it back to the Middle East region.

The unusual move is being made to accommodate delays due to emergent repair work on USS Nimitz (CVN 68). The Everett, Wash.-based carrier was expected to deploy to the region to relieve Eisenhower early next year. Nimitz is now expected to deploy once repair work is complete.

Bringing Eisenhower back home to its homeport in Norfolk, Va. in December will permit the Navy to resurface the ship's flight deck and make it available to return and remain in the Middle East region for several more months. This decision also provides the ship's crew a welcome holiday respite from what will become nearly 10 months on station.

"Our Navy is in high demand operating forward all over the world," said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert. "And our Sailors, civilians and their families are doing a great job meeting that demand. Expanded maintenance work on USS Nimitz was unpredictable and has required us to establish a carrier schedule that satisfies our commitments overseas and most importantly is mindful of the stress on our Navy family. This is the right thing to do."

The John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group, currently deployed to the region, will continue providing carrier presence in the CENTCOM Area of Responsibility. Stennis departed its homeport of Bremerton in August.

Thanksgiving this year was by far the BEST ever! When we recived the email from our son EARLY Thanksgiving morning I was elated! I read the email from our son and needless to say, EVERYONE started shedding tears of joy! Thank you to everyone that has made it possible for our son,AT2 (AW) Zackary Saylors, to be home for the holidays!

That is such great news for the ship to get some time home for the holidays. My daughter in law is so glad also. I'm glad the Navy understands the stress level for our families and all that is going on over in the Middle East right now. Thank you so much. I won't be able to see my son, I don't have the money to travel to VA to visit him when home, since I live here in TX, but I know he will call me. Happy Holidays to the NAVY!!

11/22/2012 9:40:00 AM

Yes this is nice for our Men and Woman to come home for the holidays but to send then right back is very upsetting. We are talking about down sizing our Navy and now this. My thoughts go out to our service members. Its a hard job being away from family now its going to be even harder. Enjoy your stay at homes with loved ones and Thank you for all you Men and Woman do.

11/22/2012 8:20:00 AM
I miss my brother Amit jackson. He needs to come home.

11/22/2012 12:48:00 AM
This is unbelieveable! This is a miracle! My sailor, Joseph Rodriguez, proposed to me right before he left for deployment on the USS Dwight D Eisenhower (cvn 69). I have been counting down the months until he returns and if this is true, counting the months will turn into counting the weeks! I have learned through this experience to not get my hopes but I will be praying constantly til I hear from my sailor that our dreams are coming true! The power of God is amazing!! THANK YOU NAVY!!
