WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Department of the Navy (DoN) Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) 2012 held its final event at the Pentagon Dec. 5, offering federal civilians and military members one last opportunity to contribute to more than 4,000 pre-screened charities.
Rama Latin, the National Capital Area and DoN charitable campaigns program administrator, launched the event in the Pentagon Atrium, addressing attendees and gathered representatives of more than fifteen charities.
"CFC is important because it helps to raise funds in the National Capital Area and around the world. People sometimes don't realize that a small payroll deduction can make a huge diference. Just a simple gift of $1 a pay period can feed 35 to 40 kids in Africa."
Latin noted that CFC charities feed families who have lost their homes, help wounded service members and their families, foster education in underprivileged areas and provide respite services to the parents of children with special needs.
One such charity, Jill's House, offers overnight camps and respite care for children with intellectual disabilities between the ages of 6-16, giving parents a much needed break.
"We have a full-service faciility that is designed to accomodate all the mental and physical needs of the children so their families can have a restful break, without worries, " said Althea Katona, advancement coordinator for the charity. "CFC allows us to offset a lot of the costs that come with running a non-profit, such as marketing costs and tax deductions. It's a real asset to our charity."
This year's goal for the DoN CFC contributions is $2.9 million. Thus far, $2,345,000 has been raised. Donations are being accepted online at cfcnca.org until Dec. 15. Those who wish to donate have the option of a one time donation by credit card or check, or a monthly payroll deduction.
Since 1971, CFC has been the sole authorized workplace charitable campaign for the federal service. CFC administrators and volunteers reach potential donors through more than 200 local organizations, and givers may contribute via cash, check or payroll deduction. Pledge forms are available through local coordinators and online at regional CFC Web sites.
Charities wishing to participate in CFC must complete an annual application process. Organizations may apply to be listed as local, national or international charities depending on their area of service. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which oversees the program, maintains strict eligibility and public accountability criteria that all participating CFC charities must meet.
The campaign has garnered more than $6 billion in charitable contributions since its inception in 1961.
