SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Sailors from Center for Security Forces (CENSECFOR) Detachment (DET) San Diego volunteered at the Coronado High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) first drill meet Feb. 2.
"The most critical element in the success of this drill meet was the full-fledged participation of our parents and military volunteers," said Capt. Ken Ireland, NJROTC senior Navy science instructor.
The mission of the NJROTC is to instill the values of citizenship and service to the United States as well as personal responsibility and a sense accomplishment for the nation's youth.
Sixteen schools competed in the all-day event and volunteers from CENSECFOR DET San Diego worked in the physical training portion of the event. This portion consisted of push-ups, curl-ups, a 1600-yard run, and a one-mile relay. CENSECFOR DET San Diego volunteers monitored cadets as they performed the various tasks as well as kept time for runners.
"It was a lot of fun to come out and help and I would love to do it again," said Gunner's Mate 2nd Class David Cottle, CENSECFOR DET San Diego instructor.
The day began to conclude with the U.S. Navy's parachute team (Leap Frogs) landing in the center of the football field. This team travels throughout the United States to demonstrate professional Navy excellence by performing precision aerial maneuvers.
Then it was time for the presentation of awards where Coronado High School finished in 3rd place and they were very happy with all the volunteers who came out to support the event.
"Our judges and scorekeepers did a phenomenal job of keeping 16 schools running on a tight timeline on step and ready to perform. We simply could not have pulled this event off without their engaged participation," said Ireland.
Detachment San Diego is one of fourteen training locations within the Center for Security Forces domain. The Center for Security Forces provides specialized training to more than 28-thousand students each year across the U.S. and around the world.
