USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH, At Sea (NNS) -- Sailors aboard USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) enjoyed a traditional steel beach picnic while the ship is underway completing work-ups and flight operations, Feb. 4.
As a treat to the crew for their efforts and determination, the picnic provided some relaxing time in the midst of a busy schedule.
"It's a nice reward after a couple of hard carrier qualifications," said Commanding Officer Capt. Brian E. Luther. "The crew operated great and finished early so it's nice to take a break."
Sailors were served grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, and potato salad by officers, who were quick to volunteer their time.
"We all just love getting time to see and talk with the hardworking crew," said Cmdr. Christopher Merris, the command chaplain. "We have the opportunity to serve those who serve."
Sailors sat along the flight deck and enjoyed their barbecue dinners as the sun set on the ocean. Once the sun went down, a giant movie screen came up and the crew watched a movie under the stars.
"It's a different atmosphere up here today," said Ship's Serviceman Seaman Frederick White. "I'm just trying to take a snapshot of all the memories. It's not every day you can do all of this with a 360 degree view of the ocean, the setup they've done for us is really nice."
George H.W. Bush is conducting training and carrier qualifications in the Atlantic Ocean.
