NORFOLK (NNS) -- Nearly 500 people collaborated online from Feb. 4-10, in the first of a three-phase war game to help the Navy better understand the electromagnetic environment.
Co-sponsored by Navy Warfare Development Command (NWDC), the Office of Naval Research and the Naval Postgraduate School, the first phase of electromagnetic maneuver Massive Multiplayer Online War Game Leveraging the Internet - or em2 MMOWGLI - focused on "Know the EM Environment: Understanding EM Energy."
"We have been using EM technology for some time but are really in our infancy in terms of understanding the possibilities of the spectrum and subsequently applying technology to advance our warfighting," said Rear Adm. Terry B. Kraft, commander, NWDC. "The first phase of the game generated over 2,000 idea cards which were subsequently developed into 24 action plans to help us educate our personnel, manage command and control and better communicate in the electromagnetic spectrum."
NWDC's Navy Center for Innovation classified website also hosted game discussion in a secure environment and will continue to do so over the next phases.
em2 MMOWGLI's two follow-on phases are:
* "Be Agile: C2 in the EM Environment," Feb. 18-24
* "Change Our Paradigm: Tactical Employment of EM Weapons," March 4-10
New players can register for the next two phases at https://mmowgli.nps.edu/em2. Significant achievements during each phase will be recognized.
Results of the game will be used to inform Navy innovation concept development and experimentation efforts.
