PITI, Guam (NNS) -- Sailors assigned to submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) gathered to celebrate a wall dedication ceremony completing a mural painting project outside Polaris Point, along Marine Corps Drive, Feb. 19.

The mural, which depicts the ship sailing through the island's historical Glass Breakwater was painted by the Second Class Petty Officers Association (SCPOA) and was the idea of Logistic Specialist 2nd Class Luigi Cuzzi, SCPOA president and its members.

"Ever since I had been in Guam, I noticed all the retaining walls were nicely decorated, they have nice murals and this was the only wall that was abandoned," said Cuzzi. "We found out what we needed to do to take over this wall and made it look nice like the other ones."

Months before work began on the wall, Cuzzi, along with members of SCPOA, worked with the Island-wide Beautification Task Force to adopt and paint a bus stop just outside U.S. Naval Base Guam. It was then that Cuzzi received permission from the Piti Mayor's Office to adopt the wall.

"I think it's an excellent, positive landmark for the Frank Cable and the village of Piti," said Frank Cable Command Master Chief Roger Schneider. "Everyone who drives by can see the pride we take in not only our ship, but also the village that hosts us."

Schneider, along with the Frank Cable's commanding officer, Capt. Pete Hildreth, executive officer, Capt. Timothy Sparks and Guam's Lt. Gov. Ray Tenorio were on hand to support and thank the SCPOA for all the their hard work over the last few months.

"I think it provides a great opportunity for us to give back something to the community and for us to share cultures and gain a better understanding with those that we partner with in the local villages," said Hildreth. "Things like this, good community service projects which add value to the local villages, are what's really important and help foster long-term ties that demonstrate the Navy's commitment to the people of Guam."

Frank Cable conducts maintenance and support of submarines and surface vessels deployed in the U.S. 7th Fleet Area of Responsibility.
