NEWPORT, R.I. (NNS) -- An instructor from the Navy Supply Corps School (NSCS) was announced Feb. 27 as winner of the 2012 Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) Excellence in Safety Award in the Collateral Duty Safety Officer category.

Alvarado, Texas, native Lt. Thomas Cathey, an International Military Instructor for NSCS, was recognized for outstanding performance in the areas of safety and risk management in a training and education environment.

"Safety is a fundamental enabler of combat readiness," said Rear Adm. Don Quinn, NETC commander. "Instilling good safety and risk management habits during initial training makes our training more effective and prepares Sailors for their introduction to the fleet. The efforts of our winners have set the standard for the domain and have directly contributed to fleet combat readiness."

"The safety of our staff and students, both on and off duty, here at the Navy Supply Corps School is a very high priority as it is across the entire Center for Service Support domain," Cathey said. "I am honored and grateful for this award."

Lt. Cathey will depart NSCS in August 2013 for his supply officer department head tour aboard USS Momsen (DDG 92) in Everett, Wash.

NSCS is one of seven learning sites assigned to the Center for Service Support (CSS). These learning sites provide Sailors with the knowledge and skills required to support the fleet's warfighting mission. Each year, the nearly 250 staff and faculty members of CSS deliver training to more than 10,000 personnel serving in the Navy's administration, logistics and media communities.
