GROTON, Conn. (NNS) -- Los Angeles-class submarine USS Toledo (SSN 769) officially received the 2012 Battle Efficiency or Battle "E" award during a ceremony while the submarine is undergoing maintenance availability in Groton, Feb. 27.

Cmdr. Sam Geiger, USS Toledo commanding officer, said the ceremony was scheduled for late February due to the submarine's maintenance schedule and to allow the entire crew to be present.

"The award represents the hard work by the crew preparing for the deployment and further recognizes the success achieved on our extended deployment by never letting up on their effort," said Geiger. "I challenged them to wake up every day and give the boat 100 percent, and they answered the call. I couldn't be more proud of them."

The commander of Submarine Force Atlantic (COMSUBLANT) announced the winners of the 2012 Battle "E" competition in January.

Based on a yearlong competition, one submarine from each submarine squadron in the Atlantic Fleet is recognized. The awards are presented by the commodore of each squadron to the submarine under their command which has demonstrated the highest level of battle readiness during the evaluation year.
