NORFOLK (NNS) -- Norfolk Ship Support Activity (NSSA) held a Navy Afloat Maintenance Training Strategy (NAMTS) graduation aboard Naval Station Norfolk, Feb. 28.
NSSA Sailors enrolled in NAMTS receive on-the-job, rating-specific training, which can help them earn up to eight different Navy Enlisted Classifications (NECs).
"We are going to continue to evolve NAMTS," said Commander, Navy Regional Maintenance Center (CNRMC) Rear Adm. David Gale, the keynote speaker for the event. "It is an investment we are making in you. It is your hard work that gets you the NEC, and when you folks go back to sea, you are taking some of this new training with you, which will certainly pay big dividends in any Ships Force."
The graduating class of 18 Sailors earned certificates in at least one of seven areas. NECs earned were among shipfitting, pipefitting, valve repair, diesel engines, outside electrical, outside mechanical, and gas turbines.
"I was just in a meeting yesterday where we discussed the alignments between the maintenance and training communities, and what we can do to build the RMCs into the biggest "C" schools in the Navy," said Gale. "These Sailors will return to the Fleet with critical skills sets that will enable them to maintain our Navy's ships and keep them mission-ready."
NAMTS training is available to Sailors on shore duty at Regional Maintenance Centers (RMCs), Intermediate Maintenance Activities or Facilities (IMAs or IMFs), shipyards, aboard tenders, as well as those stationed on ships undergoing extended maintenance availabilities.
