WEST BETHESDA, Md. (NNS) -- Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) signed a five-year Educational Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the Virginia Polytechnic and State University (Virginia Tech), March 13.
The EPA enables NSWCCD engineers and scientists to work directly with Virginia Tech students on projects within the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines as well as provide access to NSWCCD's unique facilities and equipment.
"We look forward to strengthening our partnership with Virginia Tech (VT)," said Capt. Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper, NSWCCD commander. "It's our hope that Virginia Tech graduates will consider careers with the Navy and Carderock Division after spending time with our scientists and engineers."
Richard Benson, dean of Engineering at Virginia Tech said, "VT students have long benefited from a positive relationship with Carderock, through internships, tours, and jobs. We are excited to further strengthen this partnership through the EPA."
The goal of this partnership is to encourage students to pursue a career in a STEM-related field by providing unique hands-on opportunities to help solve real-world technical challenges the Navy faces. NSWCCD will provide both academic and career guidance to students, make personnel available to teach, and assist in the development of science and engineering courses.
NSWC Carderock Division's responsibilities span a broad range including science and technology, research and development, test and evaluation, product delivery and fleet support. NSWC Carderock Division leads the Navy in hull, mechanical and electrical engineering expertise and delivers technical solutions in order to build and sustain a dominant, ready and affordable fleet. Headquartered in West Bethesda, Md., approximately 3,600 scientists, engineers, technicians and support personnel are located across the United States.
