PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. (NNS) -- Sailors stationed on Naval Magazine Indian Island (NMII) visited with World War II veterans at Seaport Landing Retirement and Assisted Living Community in Port Townsend, Wash. March 25.
The monthly visits known as "Commander's Breakfast" are a way for the veterans and Sailors to share stories and experiences with each other.
"It makes me feel like I was back in the Navy," said retired 2nd Class Medic Ed Adams. "They're nice and friendly, and I'm glad to see them every time they get here."
Cmdr. Gary Martin, commanding officer of NMII, emphasized the respect and gratitude he has for veterans.
"It's an absolute pleasure to come out to see these American heroes," said Martin. "This generation isn't going to be around much longer, and they truly are heroes."
During the breakfast, the veterans shared experiences they had in the Navy with the Sailors in attendance.
"The veterans get a lot of joy out of Commander's Breakfast," said Debbie Lafollette, Office Manager at Seaport Landing Retirement and Assisted Living Community. "It's nice for them to be able to share their stories with the Sailors, and they look forward to it every time."
This was Martin's last breakfast with the veterans before he is relieved at the NMII change of command ceremony, March 28.
"I'm going to miss being able to come out here and share stories with these veterans," said Martin.
