NORFOLK, Va. -- (NNS) -- USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) Sailors and the Norfolk Admirals hockey team held a Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society(NMCRS) benefit game at Scope Arena March 29.
Prior to the game, Truman's color guard presented the national ensign and Aviation Boatswain's Mate Airman Jerrell Cunningham sang the national anthem.
Air Traffic Controlman 1st Class Amber Khoryati and Aviation Electronics Technician 1st Class Christopher Lent, Truman's 2012 Sailors of the Year, dropped the ceremonial first puck to start the game.
"I felt privileged and honored that I was asked to represent Truman," said Khoryati. "To come out to an Admirals game in uniform is an honor."
Jennifer Snyder, Truman's Morale, Welfare and Recreation officer, said the event presented a great opportunity for Truman Sailors to interact in an off-duty setting.
"Events like these give our Sailors a chance to get out of their daily routine, relax a little and interact with the public in a more laid-back atmosphere," said Snyder.
More than 200 tickets were sold to Sailors at a discounted price, and $2 from every ticket sold were donated to NMCRS.
"It's a great way to have a fun evening and also support the drive," said Kathy Nelson, Director of NMCRS Norfolk.
The Admirals beat the Syracuse Crunch 5-4.
The NMCRS is a private non-profit charitable organization sponsored by the Department of the Navy that provides financial assistance to service members and their families.

As always, it is gratifying to read of Truman sailors participating in events benefiting service members and their families. It is also gratifying because my son is assigned to the Truman. I am a proud Navy mom!
