NAVFAC Washington Breaks Ground for Quantico School

QUANTICO, Va. (NNS) -- A groundbreaking ceremony was held for Quantico Elementary School on board Marine Corps Base Quantico April 12.

Naval Facilities Engineering Command Washington will oversee the 129,577 square foot project, which will consolidate three existing elementary schools, serving approximately 750 students and faculty.

"We're very proud to be the execution agent for the Quantico Elementary School project," said Lt. Cmdr. Julie Meier, resident officer in charge of construction on Quantico. "We know that the impact of the project will provide immeasurable benefit to the community. Our team has worked diligently with DoDEA (Department of Defense Educational Activity) and the Marine Corps team to execute the contract award, design and development, and now construction."

Col. David Maxwell, commanding officer, MCB Quantico and Michael Gould, district superintendant, also spoke at the event and participated in the ground breaking ceremonial dig.

Homeland Contracting Corporation, Chesapeake, Va., was awarded a $42.3 million contract for school construction and demolition of the existing Russell Elementary School.

Construction is scheduled for completion late summer 2014. Demolition of Russell Elementary School is scheduled for completion by April 2015.
