JEBEL ALI, United Arab Emirates (NNS) -- Guided-missile destroyer USS Stockdale (DDG 106) arrived in Jebel Ali for a port visit April 9.

While in Jebel Ali, Stockdale Sailors spent time on liberty in the nearby city of Dubai.

"We've been out here working hard for about a month and a little time off will do everyone some good," said Stockdale Command Master Chief Rob Meyer. "We encourage all our Sailors to take some time to see the sights, relax and recharge the batteries."

This visit to Dubai holds special significance for Cmdr. Lex Walker, Stockdale's commanding officer.

"This will be my last port visit with the crew and of course we'll do the hail and farewell to say goodbye. "I couldn't think of a better place to wrap up my command experience with Stockdale," said Walker. "Dubai is one of the most unique cities in the world and I am going to take advantage of the opportunity to get out and experience the culture as well."

For most of Stockdale's crew, this will be their first visit to Dubai.

"I've heard a lot about it and I am excited to taste the cuisine, see all the sights, take in a little extra sun and just relax," said Seaman Barrett Thompson.

While on liberty, many Sailors will participate in tours sponsored by the ship's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program.

"I am doing three different MWR tours," said Cryptologic Technician (Collection) 3rd Class Berkleigh Kline. "I've never seen this side of the world so I am super excited."

Stockdale's visit to Jebel Ali is part of the ship's deployment to the Western Pacific that began in January 2013.

Stockdale is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility promoting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions for Operation Enduring Freedom.
