PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- Sailors and Marines aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) surpassed the 2013 goal for the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) fundraising drive April 14.
"The goal was $75,000," said Lt. j.g. Eric Foss, a coordinator for the NMCRS fundraising drive. "We raised more than $89,000."
Foss said departmental representatives contributed to the drive's success.
"The representatives deserve a lot of credit for getting the word out there," Foss said. "Having the competition between departments to be first off in Thailand helped too."
Foss also credited Senior Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Galen Swogger, another coordinator for the NMCRS fundraising drive, for the successful campaign.
"Senior Chief Swogger deserves a lot of credit," Foss said. "He was my go to guy for a lot of things and was there for any questions that I had."
Swogger voiced his satisfaction with the results of the drive, as well.
"I am pleased that so many Sailors were willing to give," said Swogger. "This is a drive where we'll see definitive benefits for our service members."
Numbers were tallied in two categories for the competition: the department that raised the most money overall and the department that had the biggest contributions per person.
Operations raised the most money overall, bringing in $13,686 this year, followed by Weapons and Reactor Departments.
The Administration Department donated the most amount of money per person, contributing an average of more than $68 per person. Deck and Media Departments followed in second and third place.
