NORFOLK (NNS) -- The Stennis Center for Public Service presented two Sailors from the aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) with Stennis Leadership Awards April 13.
Lt. Kent Davis, the flight deck officer aboard George H.W. Bush, received The Honorable George H. W. Bush Leadership Award and Senior Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Steven Gill, weapons department leading chief petty officer, received the Senior Chief Storekeeper Charles G. Zwierzynski Leadership Award.
The Stennis Leadership Awards recognizes individuals stationed on aircraft carriers who demonstrate superior and sustained leadership qualities. Award recipients are nominated by fellow crew members and selected for the award by a group of their peers.
"It's really an honor to receive this award," said Gill. "In all reality it is a reflection of the Sailors who work for me."
The Stennis Center for Public Service arranged a trip to Washington, D.C. for both award recipients and their families. The trip to D.C. is designed to increase understanding of the role Congress plays in setting national security policy in the United States and in the environment in which Senator John C. Stennis served for 41 years.
"Both awardees are known for their unique ability to communicate," said Capt. Brian Luther, commanding officer of USS George H. W. Bush. "They show their Sailors work, and their Sailors will work. They show their Sailors loyalty, and their Sailors will give them loyalty."
George H.W. Bush is currently conducting training operations in the Atlantic Ocean, strengthening the Navy's forward operating and war fighting ability.
