USS Chung-Hoon Remembers Battle of Midway

SOUTH CHINA SEA (NNS) -- The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) honored the memory of fallen service-members from the Battle of Midway with a ceremony, June 4.

One of the most influential battles in American history, the Battle of Midway is known to be the turning point of World War II in the Pacific theater. It was fought in the vicinity of Midway Island from June 4-7, 1942.

Cmdr. Justin Orlich, Chung-Hoon, commanding officer, provided a brief history address to the crew regarding the significance of the battle.

"What makes our nation so great is the willingness of its citizens to put aside the comforts of home and travel great distances to defend freedom and democracy around the world, including remote, faraway places such as Midway Island," said Orlich. "Your willingness to serve our country today is what will continue to ensure our nation remains strong for the next generation."

The ceremony included the parade of colors and national anthem. The firing of a 21-gun salute by the ship's crew, concluded the ceremony, remembering those whom made the ultimate sacrifice.

"I think it's really important to remember the people who gave their lives for our country," said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Jesse Boles. "It's always moving when they fire a salute and play taps."

Chung-Hoon is currently deployed to the 7th Fleet area of operation supporting security and stability of the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
