NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Sailors Participate in 25th Annual Clean the Bay Day

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Twelve Sailors from NAVSUP FLC Norfolk and some of their family members participated in the 25th annual Clean the Bay Day aboard Naval Station Norfolk June 1.

According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), the sponsoring organization for the event, 85 tons of trash was removed from 300 miles of shoreline and roadways throughout the Hampton Roads area by more than 5,900 volunteers, including 236 active duty military personnel who took part in the event.

"We collected more than 50 pounds of trash and debris in and around the parking lot near Pier 14 and the fishing pier," said YNC Rosilyn Gray, coordinator for the NAVSUP FLC Norfolk team. "It was important to us to be out there representing our command. We wanted to be a part of the effort to raise awareness of the problems presented by trash and debris accumulating in and around our waterways. We were glad to have the opportunity to help keep our base clean."

Clean the Bay Day is CBF's annual stream and shoreline cleanup, during which citizen volunteers come out to remove litter and debris from Virginia creeks, streams, rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay. On average, the event enlists more than 6,500 volunteers who clean up more than 75 tons of debris each year.

Navy Food Management Team Instructor CSC Jenifer Hutt, one of the NAVSUP FLC Norfolk volunteers, brought her two children with her to help with the effort. "My eldest son Christian is 11 and my youngest son Jaxson is 7," said Chief Hutt. "Prior to Clean the Bay day I spoke with my children on a number of occasions about community service and the importance of it. They enjoyed themselves and the camaraderie of helping while cleaning the bay."

Since 1989, Clean the Bay Day has engaged more than 122,000 volunteers, who have removed approximately 5.8 million pounds of debris from nearly 5,500 miles of shoreline in Virginia alone.

"This was a great partnership between our command and Naval Station Norfolk," said SH2 Tray Bynam, a ROM II technician with the NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Fleet Assist Team. "We found many car parts along the waterfront. There were pieces of trim, gas caps, and windshield wipers. I also had a chance to meet many shipmates from other local sea and shore commands. It was a great way to kick off the weekend."
