SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest personnel joined Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery visitors in the observance of a ribbon cutting ceremony June 7, marking the completion of two bus stop emplacements in the Point Loma cemetery.

Prior to the two bus stops, there was no for visitors to sit while waiting for mass transit busses throughout the cemetery. The project placed two concrete pads totaling four cubic yards, two plaques, two prefabricated concrete benches, and the relocation of one bus stop sign on the west bound lane of Cabrillo Memorial Drive.

"We were approached by Zoey Flint (volunteer, Point Loma Community Association)to see if we could do something about providing benches for people who were waiting for the bus to depart the cemetery, and I thought that was just a great idea," said Capt. Scott Adams, Naval Base Point Loma (NBPL) commanding officer.

The job was estimated to cost $8,250 if the work was performed by a contractor. By utilizing Seabees assigned to Self-Help NBPL, Veterans Affairs and tax payers benefitted from a cost avoidance of $5,250.00. Avoidance was calculated from savings on labor and overhead costs. Funds were spent on the costs of materials to build the benches, concrete platforms, and plaques.

"It took a lot of coordination between the Navy, Department of Veterans Affairs, the cemetery, and the city and its bus stops," said Adams. "We got all the pieces in place and ended up with two bus stops."

The Fort Rosecrans cemetery receives visitors on a daily basis. It is an active cemetery where Veterans of all conflicts are laid to rest from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The project couldn't have been completed without my team," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Nisbett, NBPL Seabee project crew leader. "We are honored to come out here to complete this work for the community."

Members of the official ribbon cutting were NBPL Self Help Seabee Project Crew Leader Petty Officer 2nd Class Nisbett, Point Loma Community Association Volunteer Zoey Flint, and Department of Veterans Affairs Representative Tom Mullen.

In attendance were Point Loma Community Association volunteers, cemetary workers, NBPL Commanding Officer Capt. Scott Adams, NAVFAC Southwest Public Works Officer for NBPL CDR Timothy Rogers, NAVFAC Southwest Deputy Public Works Officer for NBPL James Mugg, NAVFAC Southwest Tenant Liaison for NBPL Shannon Chambers, and Seabees assigned to NBPL. Seabees included were NBPL Operations Petty Officer 1st Class Porcaro, NBPL Project Crew Leader Petty Officer 2nd Class Nisbett; NBPL Crew Members Petty Officer 2nd Class Walker, Petty Officer 3rd Class Brucken, Petty Officer 3rd Class Benitez, and Petty Officer 3rd Class Carver.
