MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (NNS) -- A Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) employee has been named as the Navy's recipient of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) 2013 Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award June 20.

Bonnie Pyett, who serves as deputy director, Joint Engagement Programs at NAVSUP, "incorporates leadership and Equal Opportunity principles into her professional career while assisting her mentees and co-workers in identifying opportunities to overcome discrimination and recognize and eliminate barriers that hinder equal opportunity for service members and civilians, including women and minorities in the military," her nomination states.

"Bonnie provides unparalleled leadership every day here at NAVSUP," said Rear Adm. Mark Heinrich, commander, NAVSUP. "I'm proud of her service to both the Navy and her community."

The NAACP Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award honors military members and Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees, men and women, who distinguish themselves by making significant contributions to their country in the areas of civil/human rights, race relations, equal opportunity, affirmative action, human resources, and/or public service.

Among many noteworthy accomplishments is her mentoring of 14 Cheyney University alumni working at the Naval Supply Systems Command, Department of Army, Defense Logistics Agency and Department of Homeland Security. She provides one-on-one mentoring, conducts workshops, serves as a role model and provides guidance on training opportunities and volunteer service.

"As a graduate of Cheyney University, I recognized the need and responsibility to ensure they all successfully completed their intern programs while balancing their personal and professional goals," Pyett said.

Pyett earned accolades for her volunteer efforts with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and the Central Dauphin School District.

"Ms. Pyett displays exceptional character that distinguishes her as an outstanding leader and role model," her nomination package states. "She consistently practices the belief that all people are created equal."

"Bonnie's dedication to serve, volunteer efforts, and mentoring is commendable," her award citation states. "She exemplifies the highest standards of personal integrity, diversity and equality awareness in promoting equal employment opportunity for all."
