SECNAV Meets with Commander in Chief of the Vietnam People's Navy

NEWPORT, R.I. (NNS) -- Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus met with the Vietnam People's Navy's Commander in Chief Adm. Nguyen Van Hien Sept. 17 on the margins of the International Seapower Symposium.

Mabus provided remarks at the Symposium which focused on the relationship between maritime security, political stability and economic progress. Hien was one of the many international officials in attendance.

Following the speech, Mabus and Hien met to discuss U.S. - Vietnam shared interests and areas where we could enhance our cooperation.

During the conversation between the leaders, Mabus also invited the Vietnam People's Navy to engage with the U.S. Navy in multilateral exercises like RIMPAC and on expanding initiatives such as military medicine cooperation, Search and Rescue and Maritime Domain Awareness.
