PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten (Sept. 29, 2017) Soldiers and Marines assigned to Joint Task Force Leeward Islands (JTF-LWI) load equipment onto the expeditionary fast transport vessel USNS Spearhead (T-EPF 1). JTF-LWI deployed to Sint Maarten to assist in humanitarian aid and disaster relief efforts after Hurricane Irma hit the island. Spearhead is part of Southern Partnership Station 2017, a U.S. Navy deployment executed by U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet, focused on subject matter expert exchanges with partner nation militaries and security forces in Central and South America. GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (SEP 13, 2017) The expeditionary fast transport ship USNS Spearhead (T-EPF-1) transits out to sea after refueling at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay (NSGB) and on loading other supplies in route to the island of St. Martin to support disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. The Department of Defense is supporting the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the lead federal agency, in helping those affected by Hurricane Irma to minimize suffering and is one component of the overall whole-of-government response effort.
