John Dye, commanding officer of Recruit Training Command, in the USS Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall at Recruit Training Command. Sanes, who enlisted in the Navy on Nov. 14, 1941, never completed boot camp at Great Lakes because of the Pearl Harbor attack and America's entrance into the war. Sanes, along with other recruits, was immediately assigned orders. Sanes was ordered to the USS Hammann (DD 412). 130610-N-WE887-005 WASHINGTON NAVY YARD (June 10, 2013) Dr. Don Walsh, a retired U.S. Navy captain, talks to acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron about the Trieste, a deep-diving research bathyscaphe which reached the deepest known part of the earth's oceans, the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench near Guam, on Jan. 23, 1960. Piloting Trieste in 1960 were Navy Lt. Don Walsh and scientist Jacques Piccard. Trieste is now permanently housed at the National Museum of the Unites States Navy at the Washington Navy Yard. Cameron piloted the Deepsea Challenger nearly seven miles to Challenger Deep on March 26, 2012. Cameron has donated Deepsea Challenger to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts.
