HA Rachael Durkovic, who works in the Dental Clinic, was the BlueJacket of the Year for FY2012; HM2(AW) Loubel Velicaria, who works in the Primary Care Clinic, was the Junior Sailor of the Year for FY2012; and HM2 Astrid Turner, who works in the Laboratory, was the Sailor of the Year for FY2012. GUANTANAMO BAY (Sep. 28, 2012) Sgt. Than Naing, USMC, who has been wounded twice in the service of his country, and now a member of Wounded Warrior Battalion East, related some of his experiences to the staff of U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay on Sept. 28. Naing joined the Marine Corps in 2004, and during his second tour in Iraq in 2006, was wounded in the shoulder by an enemy sniper, and medevaced first to Germany and then to Naval Hospital Bethesda. After hospitalization, he continued recovery in Wounded Warrior East, and upon full recovery, returned to full duty and reenlisted in the Marine Corps in 2008. Naing was deployed to Afghanistan in January 2010. It was there, about six months into his tour, that he was wounded during a firefight near a vehicle checkpoint, shot in the chest with the bullet exiting his back. Sgt. Naing is in Guantanamo Bay to talk to base residents about his experiences and highlight the many achievements of the Wounded Warrior program. GUANTANAMO BAY (Sep. 28, 2012) HM1(FMF) Tara McKnabb is awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for her work as the petty officer in charge of the U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay blood bank for the past 18 months. She revamped the standard operating procedures for blood bank processes which resulted in zero discrepancies during American Association of Blood Banks and FDS certification inspections. In addition to maintaining 100 percent accountability of the products in the blood bank, she coordinated a bi-monthly product exchange program which resulted in a $144,000 cost avoidance for the hospital. GUANTANAMO BAY (Sep. 28, 2012) HM2(AW) Latoya Hooper is awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for her work as the leading petty officer of the U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay Pharmacy for almost two years. She led and trained hospital and Joint Medical Group Guantanamo junior Pharmacy personnel, filling more than 32,000 prescriptions for military and civilian residents of Guantanamo Bay.
