SILVERDALE, Wash. (March 18, 2013) Rear Adm. Markham Rich, Commander, of Navy Region Northwest, presents the Purple Heart medal to Lt. Cmdr. Robert Moran. Moran distinguished himself when his three-vehicle convoy was attacked in the Tangi Valley, Afghanistan. Moran, serving as an individual augmentee, helped extricate service members from a severely damaged vehicle struck by a rocket-propelled grenade. In addition to the Purple Heart, Moran was also awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, NATO medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and Army Combat Action Medal.
