ARABIAN SEA March 6, 2011

Suspected pirates indicate their surrender with a white cloth on the bow of the Japanese-owned commercial oil tanker M/V Guanabara. The guided-missile destroyer USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), with support from the Turkish navy frigate TCG Giresun (F 491), assigned to NATO counter-piracy Task Force 508, responded to the reported pirating of Guanabara and detained four suspected pirates. Suspected pirate skiffs burn from weapons fire from the guided-missile destroyer USS Momsen (DDG 92) after Momsen disrupted an attack on a commercial oil tanker in the Arabian Sea. Momsen and the guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) came to the aid of the merchant vessel simultaneously in a coordinated rescue and assist effort after receiving a distress call. Momsen and Bunker Hill are deployed supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
