(Sep. 1, 2005) – Chief Petty Officer Douglas Davenport escorts one of the many retired military veterans transported from Gulfport, Miss., to the Armed Forces Retirement Home in D.C. Over 250 Gulfport citizens evacuated after Hurricane Katrina destroyed various portions of the Gulf Coast. Davenport and 120 Washington Metropolitan area Sailors volunteered as part of humanitarian assistance efforts for hurricane survivors. Va., based ship will serve as the command center and afloat staging base in the waters off the Gulf Coast.
