Naval Supply System Command's (NAVSUP) best story of 2017 is "NAVSUP FLC San Diego Fly-Away Team Surges after Hurricane Irma."

Every day, NAVSUP personnel work tirelessly to provide supplies, services, and quality-of-life support to the Navy and Joint warfighter. Among these personnel are NAVSUP's public affairs professionals who accurately report on the wide range of tasks and challenge our men and women tackle around the world every day.

"It's important that we tell the NAVSUP story," said Janice Derk, NAVSUP's Office of Corporate Communications (OCC) Director. "Telling the story not only highlights the good work our people do for our customers, it also demonstrates how we work to ensure taxpayers know the Navy is judiciously spending their tax dollars. I am proud to share this year's best stories."

The 2017 winning articles were chosen by OCC staffs at NAVSUP Enterprise commands around the globe. The articles were judged on how well they (1) engaged readers, (2) demonstrated NAVSUP being ready, resourceful, and responsive, and (3) showcased NAVSUP's positive work environment.

Hurricane response was the clear favorite this year. The winner is the Oct. 10 article by Candice Villarreal, NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) San Diego Director OCC. Villarreal reported on FLC San Diego's fly-away Enterprise Logistics Response Team (ELRT) surge to military installations in Florida and Cuba in support of Hurricane Irma. The ELRT team was formed to surge and augment other FLCs in times of crisis or emergency. Hurricane Irma was the first real-life situation for which the ELRT was deployed. Previously, they had participated only in training exercises demonstrating surge capability in the field.

Two further hurricane relief articles stood out in the voting: the Sept. 1 article "NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Provides Support for Units Deploying for Hurricane Relief Efforts" by Tom Kreidel, NAVSUP FLC Norfolk Director OCC; and the Sept. 18 article, "NAVSUP Deploys First ELRT in the Aftermath of Hurricane Irma," by Barbara Burch, NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville Director OCC.

Three further articles earned an honorable mention:
- "NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka Singapore Contracting Team Supports Effort to Bring Vietnam Era MIA Remains Home," April 6, by Tina C. Stillions, NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka Director OCC;
- "NAVSUP FLC Sigonella Provides Critical Logistics Support During POTUS Visit to Sicily," June 2, by Tia Nichole McMillen, NAVSUP FLC Sigonella Director OCC; and
- "NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Yokosuka Provides Unparalleled Support During Rare Three Carrier Strike Group Exercise," Nov. 27, by Tina C. Stillions, NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka Director OCC.

Derk extended her congratulations for all articles that were nominated, noting that, "It truly takes a team of professionals around the globe to showcase the NAVSUP team's diligent work to our communities and customers."
