Keniston assumed command of Gettysburg in March 2018. While in command, he led the crew through the ship’s Cruiser Modernization and Service Life Extension Program, which lasted over five years and was the first of its kind. Keniston also spearheaded the first iteration of the Expanded Operational Stress Control Program while in command of Gettysburg, lending his leadership to the development and success of the novel program.
During the ceremony, Keniston was presented with the Legion of Merit for his many accomplishments as Commanding Officer. Following the award presentation, Keniston and Thomas officially changed command by reading their orders to the crew.
Thomas previously held command of USS Farragut (DDG 99), and her other assignments include Executive Officer of Farragut, Main Propulsion Assistant aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65), and Operations Officer aboard USS Mitscher (DDG 57).
“I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to serve as the commander for the incredibly dedicated crew of the Gettysburg,” said Thomas. “Capt. Keniston’s leadership through this challenging and unique availability period has set the stage for success, and I look forward to building on their hard work as we restore the ship in order to carry out our nation's tasking.”
