DASN IP Meets with U.S. Ambassador, Greek Officials

WASHINGTON – Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for International Programs (DASN IP) Rear Adm. Frank D. Morley met with the U.S. Ambassador, Hellenic Navy Armaments Director, Chief of the Hellenic Navy, the Minister of National Defence, and Secretary General to the Prime Minister in Greece on May 25. The leaders discussed USN and Greece programs that are currently in development and execution.

“We are proud to celebrate 200 years of friendship with Greece,” said Morley. “Greece is a close partner and NATO Ally with which the United States shares a deep and abiding security partnership. We are committed to strengthening the bonds of our navies and collaborating to ensure interoperability and collective security.”

The discussions highlighted the Hellenic Future Frigate, MEKO Mid-life upgrades, MH-60Rs, S-70B modernization, P-3B modernization, and Maritime Domain Awareness programs, as well as the ongoing naval cooperation with one of the United States’ most strategic NATO ally.

“The Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC) is very committed to our Navy to Navy partnership with Greece," said Navy Capt. Tim Ketter, a senior defense official of the U.S. in Greece. "Greece has invested over $1 billion in U.S. Navy equipment and capabilities, including upgraded P-3Bs and the MH-60R. The U.S. Navy’s proposal for the Hellenic Future Frigate, which is backed by a government-to-government agreement, will capitalize on Greece’s current defense investments, and ensure the most advanced maritime capability in the region. Additionally, our commitment to domestic production will result in substantial and significant investments in the Greek shipbuilding industry.”  

The United States has $10.5 billion in active government-to-government sales cases with Greece under the foreign military sales (FMS) system. Recent and/or significant past sales include an upgrade of 84 F-16 aircraft to “V” configuration and a modernization package for Greece’s 11 SH-70B “Aegean Hawk” helicopters. The Hellenic Navy received the first of five refurbished P-3B Orion aircraft in 2019, concluded an FMS agreement in 2020 for the purchase of four MH-60 “Romeo” helicopters, and submitted an amended request to purchase three additional Romeos in 2021.

Since 2018, thousands of our soldiers, Marines, sailors, airmen, and special operators have trained together to increase our combined interoperability, adaptability, warfighting capability, and resilience. These engagements have helped make the partnership between Greece and the US more capable, and increased regional defense cooperation.
