Congratulations to Wayne Jordheim, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport Division, for his selection as Department of Defense (DoD) STEM Advocate of the Quarter (SAQ) for the second quarter of fiscal year 2021.

Jordheim is currently serving as the Non-Traditional Programs Office engineering lead at Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport Division. In this role, he manages DON, Office of the Secretary of Defense and Joint Services station-wide rapid fielding projects and proposals. Jordheim works closely with the Office of Naval Intelligence, National Security Agency and other entities in academia and the intelligence community to solve technical problems and develop new capabilities.

Wayne Jordheim was selected as Department of Defense STEM Advocate of the Quarter for the second quarter of fiscal year 2021.

In addition to Jordheim’s principal duties, he has purposefully dedicated time to STEM education and outreach. He serves as a mentor and sponsor of the mechanical senior design project at Washington State University, Olympic College campus. The project, conceived by Jordheim, proposes to design a more energy-efficient propeller for the Navy’s fleet of unmanned undersea vehicles. To provide a more realistic test environment, he provided the students access to a professional computer modeling/simulation package and collaborated with Olympic College to develop a project plan to design a dynamic flow tank.

Jordheim also co-founded a For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics team at Central Kitsap High School and serves as a mentor for the team. The FIRST Robotics program allows high school students to form teams that are challenged to build and program industrial-size robots, and compete with other teams. Since the founding of the FIRST Robotics program at Central Kitsap High School, Jordheim has mentored nearly 300 future engineers of diverse backgrounds.

Serving on the North Kitsap School District’s Career and Technical Education Engineering Advisory Committee, Jordheim works with engineering faculty to strategically develop new curriculum ideas, define equipment needs and priorities for the district, and participate in classroom projects as a mentor and career advisor. Ultimately, his efforts add curricula that address current maritime challenges seen by the Navy.

Over the past year, Jordheim has impacted over 4,000 students, teachers and participants through STEM education and outreach.

Congratulations to Wayne Jordheim! Naval STEM truly appreciates this exemplary work!

Naval STEM and the Office of Naval Research are excited to see Wayne Jordheim's growth in STEM education and outreach, and congratulate him on this well-deserved honor!
