Hospitalman Elena J. Peckenpaugh was assigned to the first U.S. Navy ship with a mixed gender crew. She began her trailblazing journey in 1972, when she was part of the first Navy team of women trained at the Fire Fighting School, Naval Station, Treasure Island, San Francisco.
