Taps for the Fitzgerald
Honoring the fallen
On June 17, guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) collided with a merchant vessel southwest of Yokosuka, Japan. Seven Sailors tragically lost their lives and others were injured as a result.
In remembrance of the fallen, a U.S. 7th Fleet Sailor stood alone, astern of the ship and played "Taps." The 24-note melody invokes a solemn reminder of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States. Though no longer physically present, their memories live on.
With utmost reverence, "Rest easy, shipmates. We have the watch."
