Rear Admiral Gerard P. Hueber

Rear Adm. Hueber assumed his current duties as commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 3, in July 2011.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Hueber is a graduate of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, and a 1981 graduate of the United States Naval Academy.

His initial assignment was as anti-submarine warfare officer aboard USS Downes (FF 1070). In an additional sea tour, he served as flag lieutenant in commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group 3. His department head assignments include duty as operations officer in USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) and USS Jouett (CG 29). He served as executive officer in USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53), and then commanded USS Stethem (DDG 63), Destroyer Squadron 18 and Regional Support Organization, Norfolk.

Hueber’s shore assignments include, instructor and ASW Officer Course coordinator at Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center, Pacific; flag lieutenant at commander, Training Command, Pacific; amphibious placement officer at the Bureau of Naval Personnel; flag secretary at Commander, Naval Surface Force, Pacific Fleet; head, future ships in the Land Attack Warfare branch of the Surface Warfare Directorate; planner in the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy; and, executive assistant for the director of Surface Warfare and the deputy chief of Naval Operations for the Integration of Capabilities and Resources.

Hueber was awarded a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. He is also a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College. Additionally, he served as a Navy Fellow completing the MIT Seminar XXI program on Foreign Politics, International Relations and the National Interest.

His most recent assignment was Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategy, Resources, and Plans at US Naval Forces Europe and Africa.

Hueber’s awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and various unit and service awards.
