Rear Admiral Ann DeBaets Gilbride

Rear Admiral Gilbride was appointed the first director of the National Maritime Intelligence Center (NMIC) in January 2009. The NMIC is a National Intelligence Center that integrates maritime intelligence to provide decision advantage across the Global Maritime Community.

Gilbride graduated from the University of San Diego and was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I., in 1978. She served as ship’s boatswain, auxiliaries officer and operations officer aboard the USS Frank Cable (AS-40), where she qualified as a surface warfare officer and engineering officer of the watch. After her sea tour, she was assigned to the Fleet Ocean Surveillance Information Center, COMUSNAVEUR, London, as the Soviet Submarine Analyst.

Following her transition to the Reserve Component, Gilbride drilled with the Imagery and Training Department of a FIRSTEURLANT unit in South Weymouth, Mass. In 1987, she joined the Fleet Ocean Surveillance Information Center, Europe, unit as the operations officer and then executive officer. She managed the Naval Reserve Linguist Program in the Naval Intelligence Command, and then served as executive officer of Office of Naval Intelligence Headquarters Unit, and director of the Basic Reserve Intelligence Training School in Washington.

Gilbride has commanded six Navy and Joint Intelligence Reserve Commands: Fleet Air Keflavik Intelligence Unit, Office of Naval Intelligence Surface and Coastal Warfare Unit, Defense Intelligence Agency Headquarters Unit and the Joint Chiefs of Staff/J2, Joint Reserve Intelligence Unit. She then served as commander, Reserve Intelligence Area Norfolk, covering the Mid-Atlantic Region.

As a flag officer, Gilbride commanded the Navy Reserve Intelligence Command of 4,000 intelligence professionals from 2004 to 2007. She was subsequently assigned as associate director of Naval Intelligence at the Pentagon until 2009.

Her military decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (second award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (second award) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (second award).

She received her Master of Arts degree in Management from Webster University in 1983 and her Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center in 1990. She is an attorney and member of the Bar in New Jersey, Maryland and Washington.
