Rear Adm. Shane Gahagan graduated from North Carolina State University and was commissioned in 1986. He was designated a naval flight officer in 1987.
His fleet assignments include Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 115, the Liberty Bells and the E-2C Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS), VAW-110, the Firebirds.
A 1991 graduate of U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, Patuxent River, Maryland, Class 101, Gahagan has also served at Patuxent River with the Force Warfare Aircraft Test Directorate and as flag aide to Commander, Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division.
Gahagan’s acquisition assignments include E-2C/C-2 class desk officer for Commander, Naval Air Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet, the AV-8B Program Office (PMA-257), chief test pilot for Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 20, E-2/C-2 Airborne Tactical Data System Program Office (PMA-231) and operations officer, Air Anti-Submarine Warfare, Assault and Special Missions Programs (PEO(A)).
Gahagan’s command ashore assignments include as VX-20 commanding officer and as E-2/C-2 program manager (PMA-231).
His previous assignment was with the Air Warfare Mission Area/From the Air Program manager (PMA-298). He served as the military director, Integrated Warfare Capability Enterprise Team.
Gahagan assumed his current position as commander, Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division and assistant commander for Research and Engineering, Naval Air Systems Command, in March 2016.
Gahagan is an aerospace engineering duty officer and a graduate of the Defense Systems Management College Advanced Program Management Course, the U.S. Naval War College and the Naval Post Graduate School, with a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
