Rear Adm. Robert T. “Roberto” Durand is a native of Lakewood, Colorado, and was commissioned in 1988 after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy.
As a midshipman, he completed a strategic deterrence patrol aboard USS George C. Marshall (SSBN 654). Following graduation, he served his initial tour aboard USS McCandless (FF 1084), serving as damage control assistant and electronic material officer and qualifying as a surface warfare officer and engineering officer of the watch, deploying to the Red Sea in support of Operation Desert Storm.
Accepted for lateral transfer to the Navy public affairs community, Durand served his first public affairs assignment at the Pentagon at the Navy Office of Information (CHINFO) from 1992 to 1993. He served at sea as public affairs officer aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) from 1993 to 1995.
Following transfer to the Navy Reserve in 1995, he served in Navy public affairs units (NAVINFOs) in Texas and Colorado.
Command billets include serving as director of NAVINFO U.S. 7th Fleet and U.S. Fleet Forces Command Public Affairs. Senior non-command assignments include U.S. Southern Command, Miami, and U.S. Strategic Command, Omaha, Nebraska.
Durand mobilized twice to serve as director of public affairs, Joint Task Force Guantanamo (2006-2007 and 2012-2013) and was recalled to active duty from 2009 to 2012 to serve as director of public affairs for the Chief of Navy Reserve at the Pentagon.
Durand assumed the duties as vice chief of information Oct. 1, 2016. As vice chief of information, Durand is in charge of leading the Navy Reserve Public Affairs Program worldwide. From Dec. 1, 2017 to June 15, 2018, he served on active duty as director of Public Affairs, Communication & Outreach at United States Pacific Command.
Durand’s military decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (two awards), Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various service and campaign awards. In his civilian career Durand builds leadership positions for high-technology companies.
