Rear Admiral Richard J. Mauldin

A Porterville, California native, Rear Admiral Mauldin enlisted in the Air Force in 1967. Trained as a Chinese Mandarin and German linguist, he served in the Philippines, Taiwan, and flew as a combat crewman in RC-135 aircraft. Honorably discharged in May 1975, he graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in December of that year. He was commissioned in 1976 through the Aviation Officer Candidate School Program and designated a Naval Flight Officer in 1977. An E-2B/C “Hawkeye” Naval Flight Officer, Rear Adm. Mauldin's sea duty assignments include VAW-117, making two Western Pacific/Indian Ocean deployments aboard USS Ranger (CV 61); VAW-115, home ported in Japan and embarked in USS Midway (CV 41); again VAW-115, where he served as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer, embarked in USS Midway and USS Independence (CV 62); and Carrier Air Wing Five, serving as deputy commander and commander of CVW-5, embarked in USS Independence, where he commanded the air wing for 23 months. Shore duty assignments include VAW-110 as an instructor and later as the Executive Officer; Naval Military Personnel Command attached to the Aviation Officer Assignment Branch; Naval War College, earning a master's degree in national security and strategic studies; and the Joint Staff as Deputy Director for Command Operations in the Command, Control, Communications and Computers Directorate. As a flag officer, Rear Adm. Mauldin has served as Commander, Task Force Navy/Marine Corps Intranet; Commander, Naval Space Command; U.S. Defense Attaché to the People’s Republic of China; and most recently, on the staff of the Chief Of Naval Operations as Assistant DCNO for Information, Plans and Strategy. In July 2005, he assumed his current position as Director for Operational Plans and Joint Force Development, (J7), Joint Staff. Rear Adm. Mauldin's decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (2), Legion of Merit (2), Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (2), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (9), and various other Air Force and Navy awards.
