Rear Admiral Duret S. Smith


Rear Adm. (ret) Smith was born in Palo Alto, Calif., and raised in Syracuse, N.Y. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in September of 1966. He served aboard the aircraft carriers USS Shangri-La (CVA 38) and USS Saratoga (CVA 60) and was discharged in 1970 at the rank of Signalman Second Class (SM2). Following this he attended Syracuse University, graduating in 1973 Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, while winning varsity letters in lacrosse. He then attended State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, graduating in 1977, and completing his Internship and Residency at the State University of New York, Health Science Center, Syracuse, N.Y. After his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency, Rear Adm. Smith completed a Fellowship in Hand Surgery in Tucson, AZ. During his Residency he was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps in January of 1981. Initial Reserve billets included the Medical Officer of USS Canopus (NRAS4), and Assistant Battalion Surgeon, 2nd BN 25th Marines, then Medical Officer for MEDCRU-1019. He subsequently became the Assistant Battalion Surgeon, then Battalion Surgeon for the 3rd BN, 25th Marines, Staff Medical Officer to the Commander, Naval Reserve Readiness Command Region Five. During this assignment, he volunteered for recall to active duty during Operation Desert Storm, serving with Fleet Hospital Five, Jabail, Saudi Arabia, and Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Since then, he has served as Commanding Officer, Delta Company, 4th Medical Battalion, Fourth Force Service Support Group, USMC; Commanding Officer, Fleet Hospital Seven; Commanding Officer, Fleet Hospital Twenty-Two; Division Surgeon 4th Marine Division; Naval Reserve Specialty Advisor to the Surgeon General of the for Orthopaedic and Hand Surgery; Medical Officer for the Marine Corps Reserve Officers Association; and President of the Association of Medical Corps Officers of the Navy. Previous Flag assignments include: Commander Naval Medical Forces Korea, Deputy Surgeon Pacific Fleet, Deputy Chief of the Medical Corps and Deputy Surgeon Atlantic Fleet. His final assignment was as Special Assistant to the Surgeon General of the Navy, and the Force Surgeon, Marine Forces Reserve. Rear Adm. Smith has earned numerous military awards including three Legions of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, three Navy Commendation Medals and the Coast Guard Achievement Medal.
