Rear Admiral Michael W. Hewitt

A native of Norfolk, Va., and son of a career naval aviator, Hewitt holds a Bachelor of Science degree from George Mason University and a master’s degree from the National Defense University.

Hewitt’s operational Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) assignments include first and department head tours in Patrol Squadron 10, command of Patrol Squadron Eight and command of Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing Five in Brunswick Maine. He has deployed to Keflavik, Iceland; Rota, Spain; Lajes, Azores; Sigonella, Sicily; Puerto Rico; and numerous detachment sites around the world. His other operational tours include flag secretary and battle group tactical watch officer for Commander Carrier Group Four, Commander Carrier Striking Force Atlantic where he deployed in support of numerous battle group and NATO exercises.

Hewitt’s shore assignments include: Patrol Squadron 30, Jacksonville, Fla., as a flight instructor, and special projects team lead; Chief of Naval Operations (N78) as assistant P-3 Maritime Patrol requirements officer from November 1992 to January 1995; executive assistant to the Chief of Legislative Affairs from January 1997 to August 1998; and, Chief of Naval Operations (N88) as P-3 / P-8 requirements officer from June 2002 to March 2005. Hewitt’s first joint assignment was in the Joint Chiefs of Staff, J-3 Operations Directorate, as the assistant deputy director for Information Operations from November 2006 to July 2010. Upon selection to flag rank, Hewitt assumed duties as commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group in July 2010 to April 2012. Prior to reporting to his current assignment on the joint staff as the deputy director for Global Operations, Operations Directorate (J39), he previously served on the joint staff as the deputy director, Special Programs Cross Functional Team, responsible to the vice chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff from April 2012 to February 2013.

Currently, Hewitt serves as deputy director for Global Operations, Operations Directorate, Joint Staff, the Pentagon, Washington D.C. He is responsible to the director for Operations and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for oversight and coordination of worldwide operational matters. This includes Global Reconnaissance Operations, Cyberspace Operations, Military Information Support Operations, Information Operations, and Special Programs.
