NORFOLK (NNS) -- The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVN 65), received the Battle Efficiency "E" award, Feb. 29, for carriers on the East Coast in calendar year 2007.

The Battle "E" is awarded annually to ships that exhibit the supreme condition of combat readiness in their classification and for their capability to perform their wartime responsibilities.

Enterprise was evaluated on its performance in areas including engineering and survivability; command, control, communications, and information warfare; logistics management; and, surface force safety.

After a challenging year in 2007 in which Big E successfully completed its second six-month deployment in as many years, the announcement was welcome news for Enterprise Commanding Officer, Capt. Ron Horton. He praised his crew for their professionalism and performance the past year.

"Every Sailor on the deck plate has performed at the highest levels of excellence and they are the ones who made winning this award possible," said Horton. "Whether they were conducting training exercises, combat operations or strengthening diplomatic partnerships, their level of performance was superb. Receiving the Battle E is a validation of their hard work and dedication. I could not be prouder of them."

Enterprise departments also received honors in 10 of 12 departmental categories, including; air, combat systems, damage control, deck, engineering, medical, navigation, operations, security and weapons.

"Congratulations to USS Enterprise for your selection as Battle "E" winners," said Vice Adm. Tom Kilcline, commander, Naval Air Forces, in the message. "Congratulations as well and well done to all departmental winners for your hard work and demonstrated superior performance."
